Swimming is a great way to exercise and have fun at the same time. But some times it can be a bit of a struggle to keep yourself motivated, so let’s have a look at ways that you can keep your exercise program on track.
The best advice is to make sure that you swim often. If you can average three to four swimming sessions each week, you will keep that “feel” for the water and your technique will improve. They don’t need to be lengthy sessions, it’s more important to be a regular swimmer.
You’ll be spending a lot of time in your swimming gear, so make sure that you buy good quality, it’ll last much longer.
Take care of your swimming gear. Buy a plastic storage box to place your wet gear in after a session. Make sure to rinse out your gear properly when you get home, otherwise the chlorine from swimming pool water can play havoc with your gear.
Speaking of chlorine, don’t forget that chlorine has a bad effect on your hair and scalp, so get a good fitting swimming cap; it doesn’t need to be expensive.
Chlorine can irritate your eyes as well, so include a pair of goggles in your kit. If your eyes are sensitive to light, then consider a pair of tinted goggles.
However, goggles can be a problem if they’re not looked after, treat them well so they don’t get scratched. They can be prone to misting up as well, so include some demisting fluid in your kit box.
Even though most swimming pools are heated, the temperature may vary considerably between pools and you may feel cool in your local pool. A lined swimsuit can make all the difference to your comfort level and encourage you to swim more often.
Check out your local swim centre to see if you can take advantage of any special opening times or restricted lane sessions. Battling for lane space in a crowded pool won’t help you get the best from your swim session.
Make sure that you warm up properly before you start swimming lengths. Do a few glide push-offs and easy strokes to get used to the feel of the water.
The key to getting the best out of your swim session is to make sure you breathe correctly while swimming. Practice your breathing technique as part of your routine until it becomes as natural as, well, breathing!
